Gian Piero Ventura has defended his own record despite Italy missing out on a place at the World Cup.

Ventura's side were held to a 0-0 draw against Sweden on Monday night, handing them a 1-0 aggregate defeat that meant they missed out World Cup qualification for the first time since 1958.

It was the first tournament the 69-year-old had tried to qualify for as head coach of the national team after taking over in July 2016.

During his year and a half in charge – spanning 17 matches – he has won 10 games, drawn four and lost three.

And while he is expected to resign from his post, Ventura insisted he had achieved good results during his time in the position.

'Without Italy it will be an ugly World Cup, but unfortunately it is gone. What can I do?' Ventura told Le Iene.

'I apologised to the Italians for the result.

Italy's draw on Monday at the San Siro was played out amid high tension on the bench. Midfielder Daniele De Rossi argued with an assistant after it was suggested he go on as a substitute ahead of Lorenzo Insigne.

Veteran goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon is expected to retire after the play-off failure.
